Financial advice: where to start?

Are you interested in getting some financial advice but aren't sure where to start? The Government has created a guide to help you.

Are you interested in getting some financial advice but aren't sure where to start? The Government has created a guide to help you. It's called 'Financial advice and you' and it's published by ASIC as part of its MoneySmart services. (And we're pleased to say our approach sits well under the 'green tick' column on page 16.)It suggests a 6 step process to choosing an adviser. To save you some time and trouble, here's some information about us in relation to each:Step 1: List a few possibles. We're glad you've found us! You may be interested to know that our wealth management arm, 5 Wealth Management, is an accredited FPA Professional Practice with the Financial Planning Association. This status recognises our high professional and ethical standards.Step 2: Check the Financial Services Register. Our wealth management advisers are listed on ASIC's MoneySmart register. This also sets out the extensive range of services they are authorised to provide advice on. The ASIC guide also recommends you check out the name and number of the Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) holder. We hold our own AFSL (No. 314889) which means we are not linked to a bank, life insurance company or fund manager. This is an important point of distinction and it makes us different to around 90% of the wealth management advisory industry. Having our own AFSL means we are free to explore a wider range of options than is often the case with advisers who are licensed through a particular institution.Step 3: Get their Financial Services Guide. You will find the most up-to-date version of our Financial Services Guide (FSG) in the footer of our website below. Click the link to download it.Step 4:  Check for qualifications and experience. Each of our advisers are highly regarded in the industry for their knowledge, skill and expertise.Step 5: Check they can advise on your current products. Our advisers are experienced in appraising all forms of superannuation and are authorised to advise on a broad range of products.Step 6: Check the fees. We are a fee-based financial advisory practice so you know upfront what your costs will be.Beyond this, we believe there are many other compelling reasons to choose us for financial advice. We would be very happy to chat with you to learn about what you'd like to achieve. That way we can assess whether we're a good fit for one another. This initial consultation with one of our wealth management advisers is free of charge and there is no obligation to proceed. Contact us to find out more or to make a time. We'd be delighted to help you.
